Biography
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in the small town of Bloemfontain, South Africa, on January 9th, 1892. His father, who was named Arthur Tolkien, worked at a bank. In 1895, Ronald (he was called that instead of John), his mother and his brother Hilary returned to England. His father stayed in Bloemfontain, and died on February 15th, 1896.
In 1899 Ronald tried to get into King Edwards School, but didn’t make it till the following year. The family moved a lot in the next few years to get closer to Ronald’s school. He was changed over to St. Phillips School bur won a scholarship to go to his previous school, King Edwards.
Ronald’s mother Mabel died in a diabetic coma, and he and his brother were sent to Father Francis Morgan, who was a priest. In 1908, Ronald started his first term at Oxford. He then moved to Exeter College. He graduated from Oxford with a first in English Language and Literature. In 1916, Tolkien married Edith Bratt. In 1917, 1918, and 1921 Tolkien’s three sons (John, Michael and Christopher) were born.
In that same year, (1921) Tolkien started teaching at the University of Leeds in English Language. Then he became a professor three year later. In 1925, he became a professor at Oxford. In 1929, his fourth child, Priscilla, was born. Just after that, he began to tell hi children of a funny little fellow named Bilbo. (He had already begun to write myths and legends of a world called Middle Earth, which would soon become ‘The Silmarillion’.
In 1936, Tolkien completed the book ‘The Hobbit’. A year later, it was published, and demanded for a sequel! In 1948, he finished the sequel to ‘The Hobbit’. ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ and ‘The Two Towers’ were published in 1954. ‘Return of The King’ was published a year later.
Tolkien retired in 1959. Two years before that year, he was to travel to several universities to accept honorary degrees. In 1968, the family moved to Bournemouth. His wife, Edith, died November 29, 1971.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien died on September 2nd, 1973, at the age of eighty-one. His books were very good. He is one of the best writers in the world (not to mention the best writer in Middle-Earth, too!) and he and his books will be remembered throughout time.
